Average Salary Year

Average Salaries for 2020 (based on the Annual Survey for Hours and Earnings (ASHE) 2020) relate to the pay period that includes 22 April 2020, at which time approximately 8.8 million employees were furloughed under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS); the average salaries include furloughed employees and are based on actual payments made to the employee from company payrolls and the hours on which this pay was calculated, which in the case of furloughed employees are their usual hours.

Interpreting average salary data is difficult in 2021 due to how COVID-19 impacted the Average Weekly Earnings data. This means that comparisons with 2020 need to be treated with caution, and we encourage users to focus on long-term trends rather than year on year changes during the COVID 19 years.
