The tax year for VAT is the calendar year. If you are subject to VAT, you must file VAT returns electronically on a quarterly basis and pay the due by the 10th of the following month. The quarterly returns are mandatory where the VAT amount for the previous year exceeded EUR 75,00.
VAT is generally applied on imports, and supply of goods and services performed, consumption of products in Germany at the standard rate of 19% with the exception of certain transactions.
All entrepreneurs are generally required to register for VAT. However, If you have a small business with a turnover of less than EUR 17,500 in the previous calendar year that is not expected to cross EUR 50,000 in the current fiscal year, you may opt for a special scheme for small businesses, under which you will not be required to pay any VAT. Non resident companies that make supplies of taxable goods and services also must register for VAT purposes.
